Treatment and care of the books: measures to be considered.

For over 114 years the St. George’s College Library has collected and organized thousands of books and journals in order to support the curriculum and help students and faculty in their research. When you remove a book from the Jackson Library, you must ensure that this book remains available in the future and for future generations. That’s why we give you the following recommendations:

Remove books from the shelf carefully.
Do not pull on the tip of the spine, since this will cause tearing and lead to serious damage.
Ready for repair.
If you find any book that is in need of repair, give it directly to the librarians. They will responsible for repairing it properly.
Use bookmarks.
Use a proper bookmark to mark your place. Please don’t dog-ear pages, or use sticky notes or paper clips, because these items cause permanent damage to the pages of a book.
Respect the library’s materials.
The books that are in the library belong to everyone equally. For this reason it is not allowed to mark, highlight, cut or tear sheets.
No food.
Spills and stains permanently damage books, and attracts insects and rodents that eat paper and bindings.
Wet weather.
Protect books from rain, or any other type of moisture. Humidity encourages mold growth, and water damages paper and bindings.
If you follow these tips, you will help to preserve the common good.
