Global Voice for Libraries Supports Controlled Digital Lending

Did you know that every time you borrow a book from the Internet Archive or Open Library, you are relying on something called “Controlled Digital Lending” (CDL)? Sounds technical, but it’s the legal framework that allows libraries like us to buy, digitize and lend books online. Last June, four corporate publishers also sued the Internet Archive in order to challenge CDL.

That’s why it is significant that the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) recently voiced its strong support for this longstanding and widespread library practice. IFLA is the global voice for library and information professionals. In its statement, IFLA lays out the legal and economic case “for all libraries and their users to be able to benefit from the approach.”
