The Library

Jackson Library as a RCLR (Resource Centre for Learning and Research)

In 2009, 24 new computers were provided for the classes under faculty supervision in the library. While these upstairs computers were out of bounds to individual students, eight more computers were made available downstairs, next to the Librarian’s desk. Since July of that year, librarians started to reprocess all the material in order to change the former manual loan system to the automatized one, using a software designed by Marcelo Auteli –librarian and IT, Head of Technical Processes in the library of the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa, UADE. Also, the textbooks were incorporated into the collection, with the object of having more control over the loans. Aiming to promote enjoy of reading, the juvenile literature books and the best-sellers were arranged following specific categories.

In 2010 the librarians from the primary and the secondary schools formed a team to work in both libraries together. That team had a Head of Librarians, Mrs. Nora Luaces, three part-time librarians (Cintia García, Clarisa Monzón and Nahuel Mamonde) and Mrs. Adriana Marvaldi, a teacher who started to work in the Prep library in 2007 and in the College library during 2012-2013. They continued classifying and cataloging the library material using an ISIS/MARC electronic database.

In order to meet the users’ need of accurate and updated information, in 2011 the library subscribes to Jstor, a shared digital library with more than 2,000 academic journals, and in 2013 to Dialnet, specialized in academic journals in Spanish. They both resulted invaluable tools for helping ES5 and ES6 students with their IB extended essays. In the same year, due to the considerable growth of the collection, the school bought new shelves for the library.

With the objective to improving the promotion of the library’ services in 2012 the librarian Cintia García created a library blog where news, events, and recommendations are published regularly. That blog was redesigned in 2013 by Melisa Traverso Lizarraga, who worked as a library assistant during that year.

At the end of 2013 the school implements some changes to give fresh impetus to the library, to promote a better use of its resources and to improve the collection. Among other things, it was decided that the librarian’s team should be split, leaving two librarians working in the College library and two in the Prep School library.

In February 2014, Gabriela Oleszezuk took charge of the Jackson Library. Along with the librarian Clarisa Monzón, they both manage the library during school hours. Gabriela’s presence coincided with a further refurbishing of the ground floor, wich consisted in the creation of a hall-room specially designed with tables, chairs and mobile devices conections, and the silent room, placed in the former librarian’s office where the Old and rare books collection can be found too.

We implemented a new software Pérgamo (complete and professional system to manage libraries), which manages technical processes, book circulation and online catalog search.
